How would you describe what AIPDaily.com is?
AIPDaily is an adult news site, concentrating on the newest news, adult DVD reviews and interviews.
What do you do as Editor-in-Chief?
I am in charge of all the content posted on the site. I post all the press releases that are featured on the front page, I conduct all interviews and also write DVD, website and novelty reviews, though the website and novelty reviews are something we are working on doing more of in the future.
Before you joined up with AIP Daily you wrote adult movie reviews starting when you were 19. Why did you do this? Personal project? Hobby?
I watched my first adult movie when I was 16. I had found it in my older brother’s bedroom and I “borrowed” it quite often after that first viewing. Well, I became fascinated by what I saw, so when I was 18 I started buying my own and that’s when I found out about the Adult Entertainment Expo. So I went to my first Expo in 2005 and when I was there, I met a group of reviewers and when I came back home I decided to check it out and a couple months later I started to review.
It was really fun to get to watch all these movies and to write what I thought of them. So for the next couple of years I worked for a few different sites as a reviewer. I wasn’t getting paid of course, except for the free movies, so it was basically just something to do on the site for fun.
How many different movie reviews have you done? What kind of movies do you review? Are there movies that you won’t review (or don’t like to review)?
I couldn’t tell you how many reviews I’ve done. Sometimes I’ll review four or more in a month and other times I will go a month or two without reviewing anything. As for what I like to review, I generally like story driven movies. Stuff from Wicked Pictures or Digital Playgrouund usually.I do like the all-sex movies as well but I prefer that they have some good production value behind them. So for the all-sex movies I usually go with Elegant Angel and companies like them. I am also fond of all-girl movies from Girlfriends Films, Club 59 (an off shoot of Elegant Angel) and Filly Films. There aren’t too many kinds of movies that I wouldn’t review or have someone review for the site but one example is stuff like Max Hardcore or JM Productions. While I think they should be allowed to make their movies, I don’t agree with how the performers are treated in their movies.
What elements or quality get a good movie review from you? What things get a bad review?
It really depends on the type of movie I am reviewing. I review a story driven movie differently than I would an all-sex title. Story driven movies should have a good and somewhat believable story because in most cases, the sex scenes come organically from the story, so if the story is bad or they just tack on a sex scene, it pulls you out of the movie. All-sex movies are more dependent on the individual scenes. To get a stellar review, the movie needs to be solid from the beginning to the end. I will usually allow one so-so scene but it can’t be the last scene.
What are your thoughts on the adult industry? Is it doom and gloom, or are you optimistic about its future prospects?
The adult industry has and always will be evolving. The biggest downfall for the industry over the last 10 years, other than piracy, is that it had gotten too big. Studios were popping up all the time and a lot of companies were producing so much content that the quality began to slip. It isn’t as bad now but for a while it was hard to tell one movie from the next because some of the studios were releasing three or more movies a week and the market was just flooded with mediocre product. The biggest thing right now though is the ongoing fight with piracy and the new condom mandate in LA. The condom mandate not so much though because they have to figure out how to enforce it and that will be difficult to say the least.
In addition to website and DVD reviews you also do many of the interviews posted on AIP Daily. How did you get started doing interviews? How do you determine which guests to interview?
When the website was started, I was brought on to be the DVD reviewer and I suggested that I could do interviews as well and I was allowed to do them. The guy who started the site though quickly flaked and I took over doing everything. As far as how I decide who to interview, it’s pretty simple, I just try and interview people I think will give a good interview. I particularly try and interview performers who are pretty new and have an “it” factor. That way, I can start a friendship and when they get really popular, they are more willing to do interviews in the future. The other reason I prefer doing it like that is because once a performer gets to a certain point, it is really hard to get them to do an interview because they are always busy.
What’s been the most surprising thing you’ve learned through your interviews? What qualities or attributes do you think contribute to a performer’s success or failure?
I’m not sure if I have really learned anything too surprising other than getting to know the person a better on a personal level. One thing I like to ask though is what advice they would give someone who is thinking of entering the adult industry. As would be expected, the answers varies, but the general consensus is that they should know what they are comfortable doing in front of a camera and to not deviate until they are ready. The adult industry is a revolving door as far as talent and the ones the stay around follow that bit of wisdom. It also helps if you are genuinely an exhibitionist because most fans are drawn to performers who are genuinely get turned on by performing for others.
What advice would you give people thinking of starting an adult news website like AIP Daily? Is there tons of money to be made with an “adult site”? How much time does it take?
There are a lot of adult news sites and blogs. So the key is either covering something that isn’t covered too often or doing it in a way that is new and exciting. There are multiple ways you can make money when creating an adult news site. The easiest way is to use some service that will provide the ads for you, you can go through affiliate programs or sell your ad space to individuals or companies on a month by month, multiple months or yearly basis. Initially it will take a lot of time to build up your audience, especially if you have no contacts in the industry.
What goals or future plans do you have for AIP Daily?
Well, we are always looking to get bigger and better. We had a little set back but we are planning on launching a European version of the site which will cover the European adult industry like AIPdaily does here in the States. We also have an erotic stories site, DecadentStories.com, that we launched in September. Unfortunately it didn’t take off like I hoped so
we will try and build that up this year as well.
What goals or future plans do you have for yourself? Perform in your own movies? Start your own production studio?
Performing isn’t something I am prepared to do at this time. As much fun as I think it could be, I love running AIPdaily and if I got into performing, I just wouldn’t have that time. I have written a couple scripts, one of which was picked up and will hopefully be made soon, so I have that going on. I also have my blog, Decadent Thoughts of a Deviant Barmaid (http://blogspot.deviantbarmaid.com), where I post an erotic haiku every day and where I write articles on different topics, some light and fun and others more serious.
What’s the best way for people to learn more about you, your work, or connect with you?
A good place to go is my blog, which I already mentioned. I also run the Facebook page for AIPdaily and people can also contact me on Twitter at @AIPChristina.
