Humanizing Porn Stars through the Aroused Project with Deborah Anderson
Deborah Anderson is a photographer and multimedia artist known for her photos of celebrities such as Minnie Driver, Pink, George Clooney, and others. For her most recent project, “The Aroused Project,” she turns her lens onto 16 successful porn stars capturing them both in photos and film to show these highly sexualized women in a different light than usual. We learn more about her ambitious project.

- Considers herself a renaissance woman because she has a background as a photographer, singer, and songwriter.
- Her last book featured a hundred celebrities shot in one hotel room over three months.
- After that book, she wanted to try a shoot with porn stars.

The photographic art of Deborah Anderson—”a photographer whose distinctive sensuality is located somewhere between classic French erotica and Helmut Newton” (Los Angeles Times)—adorns the walls of such notables as Sir Elton John, Cheryl Tiegs, Kid Rock, Sharon Stone, famed interior designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard and jewelry designer Loree Rodkin.
In 2010, she also shot the original 1960′s-themed interior artwork for the new Gansevoort Park location in Manhattan, which features her second book, Room 23 (daab) in all 249 guest rooms. For Room 23, Deborah photographed 100 celebrities at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills to raise funds and awareness for the Sanela Diana Jenkins International Human Rights Project at the UCLA School of Law. The book was published in 120 countries and received wide critical acclaim.

What happens when you take the most sexualized women on the planet and show them in a new light? This was the self-imposed challenge of renowned photographer and multimedia artist Deborah Anderson, known for her previous celebrity-laden coffee table books Paperthin (Verlhac) and Room 23 (Daab Publishing). In her feature film directorial debut, Anderson photographs 16 top female porn stars for her new photographic art book, Aroused: The Lost Sensuality of a Woman. She asks these woman questions about their lives, loves and work as adult film stars in a world where SEX holds currency beyond Pornography.
In the book and film, collectively known as “The Aroused Project,” Anderson humanizes these women through her artistic lens as a commentary on the concept of sensuality and how we have lost the true understanding of what that means in our modern day society and much glamorized pop culture.
